| Settling Down to Love Once upon a time yet to come the Baal Sippur Tov was approached by a young couple. Even though these two loved each other very much, the husband had a problem with settling down to one job or one place. Even though he was never long unemployed, the wife felt cheated because she wanted a more secure life. Additionally the husband would often start something, leave it unfinished and move on to something else. These things had brought the couple near to divorce and they went to the the Baal Sippur Tov for advice. He thought for a moment and then told them this story: Once there were two families who lived in a small town. To both a child was born, one boy and one girl. As these two grew they became friends and often played together. The boy grew to love this girl very much. But the girl was unsettled and always wanted to test the boundaries of her world. The boy, on the other hand, was content to follow the rules and live an uneventful life; however, because of his love, he would often follow her into dangerous or forbidden situations and would generally be the only one caught and disciplined. He didn't complain, and through it all held on to his love for the girl. She also loved him, but the world was calling her to explore it and she felt she had to. But she depended on the boys presence to give her the strength to do the things she did. She never told him this, though and it would be a decision that would come to haunt her. For one day, shortly after they had turned 15, the girl decided that she wanted to go swimming in a nearby river. The water had risen higher then normal that year and the children were warned not to swim there. The boy also begged her not to go in. Sadly, this only encouraged the girl. So she quickly ran to the water with the boy following close behind to keep her safe. It soon became obvious there was a problem. The current was too swift and she had a difficult time staying above water. The boy knew what he had to do. He immediately dove into the river and held her head above water while swimming to shore. He was a strong swimmer and they were very close to shore when the boy realized that he also was in trouble. But he would not let go, which might have saved his life. Instead, he gave one mighty push that carried the girl to shore and carried him deep into the river. Without knowing what had happened the dazed girl made it to shore. As she recovered her breath, she soon realized what had happened. The boy was gone and she was saved. She wept and would not be consoled. She begged God to take her life in exchange for the boys and determined to take her own life. But one night the boy came to her in a dream and told her that he knew how much she loved him and that his love for her would not stop because they were parted. He asked her to be strong and promised that they would once again be reunited He turned to leave in the dream and then turned back with large grin, not generally shown when he was alive, and cautioned her that in this future life, she might have to put up with his flights of fancy. She laughed and cried with him and they joyfully embraced each other for the last time in that life knowing they would once again be reunited. The couple heard this story and they embraced each other and wept, for they knew they had truly found each other. |
